Boston College, Virginia Tech to meet in ACC title game

Flutie, Eagles slip past Maryland; Hokies nip Cavaliers.

BOSTON — Twenty-four years after his uncle Doug threw the pass that earned Boston College a berth in its last major bowl game, Billy Flutie helped put the Eagles back on a path to New Year's Day with a short flick of the wrist.

The BC backup quarterback, punter and kick-holder threw for a 9-yard touchdown on a fake field goal Saturday to lead the 20th-ranked Eagles to a spot in the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game with a 28-21 win over Maryland.

"Flutie," Eagles coach Jeff Jagodzinski said. "You haven't heard that in a while around here, have you?"

Boston College (9-3, 5-3 ACC) will play Virginia Tech in the ACC title game on Saturday. The Eagles are chasing their first-ever trip to a BCS game and their first major bowl appearance since Doug Flutie led them to a Cotton Bowl victory after the 1984 season.

"After losing Matt Ryan to the NFL, nobody expected us to be in this position,'' Jagodzinski said. "But our kids are wired for winning.''

Maryland (7-5, 4-4) had been in contention for the conference title before losing three of its last four. The Terps fell to 4-1 against ranked teams.

Billy Flutie played quarterback in high school but hadn't completed a pass in college until he lined up as the holder for what would have been a 27-yard field goal with BC leading 14-7 midway through the third quarter. Flutie took the snap and rolled to his right before finding little-used tight end Jordon McMichael, who lumbered in the rest of the way from the 3.

"I'm a Flutie, and I take a lot of honor in my last name," he said when asked about the challenges of following his Heisman Trophy-winning uncle on campus.

Virginia Tech 17, Virginia 14: Dustin Keys kicked a 28-yard field goal with 6:37 to play, and the offense-challenged Hokies (8-4, 5-3) earned the opportunity to defend their ACC championship with a hard-fought win over the Cavaliers (5-7, 3-5) at Blacksburg, Va.

Virginia lost in spite of the sometimes dazzling debut of Vic Hall at quarterback. The 5-foot-9-inch Hall, one of the nation's most productive high school quarterbacks before being switched to cornerback at Virginia, ran for 109 yards and two touchdowns as a surprise starter, but the Cavaliers did little else.

North Carolina State 38, Miami 28: Russell Wilson threw for two touchdowns and ran for a score to help the Wolfpack (6-6, 4-4) beat the Hurricanes (7-5, 4-4) in Raleigh, N.C., to become bowl eligible. N.C. State has won four in a row.

Wilson threw for 220 yards and ran for 58 more for N.C. State, which pushed ahead for good late in the third quarter on Wilson's 32-yard pass to Owen Spencer. Andre Brown also scored twice and ran for 93 of the Wolfpack's 219 rushing yards against a Miami defense ranked 20th nationally.

Clemson 31, South Carolina 14: James Davis ran for three touchdowns to lift the host Tigers (7-5) over the Gamecocks (7-5), their 10th win in the past 12 games against the bitter state rival. Clemson's defense rattled Chris Smelley into four interceptions.

North Carolina 28, Duke 20: A near-perfect T.J. Yates threw three touchdown passes, and Trimane Goddard intercepted a pass in the closing seconds to seal a win for the Tar Heels (8-4, 4-4) over the host Blue Devils (4-8, 1-7).
